PRESENT PAST PERFECT

Present Past Perfect (2018)

Present Past Perfect is an interdisciplinary and participatory art project composed of three series of works, which deal with specific life periods of three different persons, through different media and methodology. The series are titled: Studies in Present and Past, Formation and Love Letters to Loneliness. The first series deals with history, documentary and encyclopedia photos and through figurative painting, “filters” these photos in a way that demystifies their historic and military context. The second series are scanned formations of military toys, which refer to military formations, but also the formative processes during childhood that are influenced by military toys. The third series is an intimate talk in a letter form, written without the possibility for chronological location, and presented to the audience for reading and entering in a very personal space full of emotional questions and conditions which are not easy translated in words.

The works in this project are a research attempt to develop a different visual discourse, which is not embedded in the dominant discipline of phallocentric perception, but produces a new way of viewing masculinity. The project’s starting point is a very specific way in which masculinity is perceived (through professions, hobbies, thinking and feeling) and rethinks it in a very specific family constellation.

Present Past Perfect is a result of over a year’s visual and theoretical research processes, during the postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts - Skopje, mentored by prof. Slobodanka Stevceska.
